The spread of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) across South Africa may appear to be a problem confined to farmers and veterinarians.

The disease has been confirmed in several provinces, with the majority in the Eastern Cape.
But the reality is far closer to home. For many South Africans who buy meat, milk and other produce directly from farms or local markets, this outbreak could affect availability and affordability.
