Budgetary constraints 'derail' justice

Budgetary constraints have led to a shortage of judges in South Africa, with the Office of the Chief Justice (OCJ) unable to provide the judiciary with the much-needed support.
Yesterday, OCJ briefed the portfolio committee on justice and constitutional development on its annual performance plan and budget.
OCJ was allocated a budget of R2.607 billion (2024-25), of which R1.333 billion was allocated to the direct charge for judges' remuneration and benefits.
During the financial year, it spent 108% of its budget. National Treasury has allocated an additional budget, ensuring that OCJ is capacitated to enhance support for the judiciary.
OCJ informed the committee of the shortage of law researchers.
