Work on bus bypass to begin

WORK to build a new bus bypass in South Shields will begin next week - with five months of roadworks likely to include lane closures.

However, South Tyneside Council bosses said disruption would be kept to a minimum and that this work would help to ensure “robust and reliable” public transport serves the borough.

The project is to improve the junction where Sunderland Road and Grosvenor Road meet, in hope of cutting congestion and journey times. This comes as part of the North East's Bus Service Improvement Plan, which has seen £163.5m earmarked for projects to help increase bus use.
