The Chronicle
|January 28, 2026
MAJOR restoration work on the Tyne and Wear Metro footbridge at the Grade II Listed Whitley Bay station has now started.
The refurbishment is part of a multi-million pound improvement scheme at the North Tyneside station, with its canopy restored in 2025.
Transport provider Nexus wants to restore the footbridge to its former glory, as part of the ongoing Metro Asset Renewal Programme.
The next phase of work will allow the footbridge to be reopened for customers, with the project scheduled to be completed by May 2026.
The key components of the work include structural repairs, strengthening of steelwork, installation of new decking, stairs, handrails, and a full repainting.
