Urgent warning over 'alarming' new flu strain

A NEW “strong” strain of flu has caused an “alarming” early rise in cases of serious illness, and North East health bosses have issued an urgent warning to the public.

NHS chiefs said that anyone eligible for the free flu vaccine should get it as soon as possible.

Dr Neil O’Brien, chief medical officer, NHS North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB), said: “The new flu strain this year can cause serious illness, which could be fatal for some older, more vulnerable, people and those who have long-term health conditions.
