EARLIER this month the Government unveiled plans to introduce a new mandatory digital ID card as part of an effort to tackle illegal immigration.

The controversial policy announced by Prime Minister Keir Starmer will be used to verify a citizen's right to live and work in the UK. Digital ID cards are to take the form of an app-based system, similar to bank cards or the NHS app stored on mobile phones.

Authoritative proof of identity such as name, date of birth, nationality and residency status, as well as a photo of the holder, would be included.

The Government have said the scheme is to be rolled out by the end of Parliament in 2029, though full proposals are yet to be announced. It is understood digital ID will be compulsory to anyone wanting to work, but cards will not be required to be carried every day.

Last week Newcastle City Council blocked calls to oppose the scheme as previously reported. Out in the city centre we asked people if they would welcome new digital ID cards.
