Son of murdered teen fulfils dream with American rugby scholarship

THE son of murdered Samantha Madgin is fulfilling his dream with a rugby scholarship. Sporty teen Callum Madgin has swapped the familiar pitches of Newcastle for the rising rugby fields of Miami, after securing a scholarship with St. Thomas University, home to Florida's top varsity rugby programme.

The former Dame Allan's Sixth Form student, who recently completed his A Level in business, psychology and PE, will study Business Management at St. Thomas while joining its successful Bobcats Rugby Club.

His grandmother, Alison Madgin MBE, waved an emotional goodbye as Callum, 18, from Wallsend, boarded his flight to the USA. She has raised him since the death of his mother, Samantha, who was fatally stabbed when Callum was just weeks old.
