Race is on to sign up for Great North Run 2026

Another 60,000 runners will take their places for the 2026 AJ Bell Great North Run in September

A first ballot for the 2026 event - the 45th - opened in September, with keen runners quick to snap up the extra early opportunity to sign up for the iconic race.

A similar rush of applications was expected when the traditional January ballot opened last weekend, because it is open for just seven days and closes at midnight on Sunday.

The online ballot for the September 13 fiesta of running will be drawn soon after the closing date.

All applicant will receive an email to confirm whether they have been successful.

No escaping your fitter enemy

EVERY new show needs a great opening. Something to forcefully grab the viewer's attention and maintain that vice-like grip for the next hour or so. The producers of Handcuffed: Last Pair Standing must have been rubbing their hands with glee when they saw the rough cut of this first episode: a glimpse of the countryside, a nice burst of birdsong, sounds of a man and a woman laughing and then... two people naked in a shower. Goodness me, and it's only just past the watershed too.
