WILLIAM Osula came dangerously close to leaving St James’ Park on deadline day - with Eddie Howe admitting things could have been very different for the young Dane, writes LEE RYDER.

Just days before the window shut, Osula’s goal against Liverpool resulted in the striker waving his hand across his face to make a “you can't see me” gesture, believed to be aimed at coaching staff.

However, Howe and his backroom team desperately wanted Osula to stay, not least for nights like Wednesday in the Carabao Cup as he bagged two against Bradford.

And after Eintracht Frankfurt refused to agree to an obligation to buy on deadline day, Howe instantly pulled the plug on his exit and insisted Osula was needed for cover.
