Major project revealed that puts North East at centre of green energy

A £150m scheme that could create thousands of jobs and put the North East at the centre of the green energy sector is being unveiled today.

The project at the Port of Tyne aims to take advantage of special tax breaks in the area.

The Port is launching the 230-acre redevelopment project with new deep-water quayside at the Port Investment Panel at London International Shipping Week. It has the backing of transport secretary Heidi Alexander and North East mayor Kim McGuinness.

The investment programme will create a longer deep-water quayside and heavy lift facilities.

It comes after the Tyne Clean Energy Park was designated an Industrial Strategy Zone with benefits that include business rates relief and other financial sweeteners for companies setting up there.
