'I've seen the worst of people, but I have seen the best as well'
The Chronicle
|October 07, 2025
LEFT terrified to leave the house by young yobs abusing him for looking different, John Wallace has seen the best and worst side of the community he lives in.
The 52-year-old told the Chronicle last week how he had suffered months of abuse at the hands of a gang of teenagers who repeatedly turn up at his Whitley Bay flat at night, to kick his door and break his windows.
John believes the thugs, who are being hunted by police, are targeting him because of his appearance and distinctive dress style.
But while the youths continue to hound John, he said he has been overwhelmed by the support and care he has received from the Whitley Bay community, since we told his story.
In the past days residents of the town have taken to social media to voice their disgust at what has been happening to their neighbour. And John says some have even dropped off supplies at his home so he does not have to risk running into his tormentors in the street.
"I have been a bit overwhelmed," he said. "It's really lovely. The way it's brought the community together is really sweet.
"There have been people putting things through my door. I have seen the worst of people, but I have seen the best as well."
