WE'VE raided the Chronicle archive for 10 photographs recalling scenes from the 1985 Great North Run.

Forty years later but same Great North Run smiles

Time flies and the competitors in our pictures will today be 40 years older.

Perhaps some folk will recognise their younger selves or other familiar faces from four decades ago. Today, the annual event is established as a high-profile date on the regional, national and international sporting calendar, with 60,000 fun runners, club runners, and some of the world’s leading athletes taking part. Last year’s run saw competitors raise an estimated £25 million for good causes with around 1,000 registered charities benefitting.

Back in 1985, the Great North Run was still in its relative infancy.
