- By SAM VOLPE Health reporter

The family of Simon Beston, 55, has paid a moving tribute following his death on August 16.

He had suffered serious head injuries following a suspected assault in St Andrew's Street on the evening of July 26 - which had seen the Ladies' Day event at Newcastle Racecourse.

He has been in hospital since then. Police believe the group involved in an altercation with Simon had been at the event.

Five people have previously been arrested in connection with what happened and all have been released on police bail.

Officers have now appealed for witnesses to what happened - shortly before 10.30pm on the evening in question to come forward.

Those arrested included a 19-year-old man on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, two other 19-year-old men, a 19-year-old woman, and a 17-year-old girl all on suspicion of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
