Loud chants of 'Eddie Howe's black and white army' echoed around St James' Park throughout the second half to drown out any social media noise suggesting it could be time for change on Tyneside. But as the Magpies put one hand on a cheque for around £10m for reaching the last 16 of the Champions League, a total jackpot of more than £25m is totting up.

Two bullet headers from Dan Burn and Joelinton proved to be enough for a richly deserved victory but it could have been more. The acid test will be whether Newcastle can back this up and recover their spluttering Premier League form at Brentford on Sunday.

The eight-time Spanish champions arrived at St James' Park with their heads down after a 92nd-minute defeat to Real Sociedad in the Basque derby at the weekend.

The Magpies made just two changes to the side that had capitulated at West Ham, with Kieran Trippier shaking off an illness to replace Emil Krafth and Harvey Barnes - the two-goal hero against Benfica last month - starting ahead of Jacob Murphy.
