Anti-social behaviour may delay re-opening of the piers

CONTINUED incidents of antisocial behaviour could delay the reopening of the piers at the mouth of the Tyne.

The North and South piers, in Tynemouth and South Shields respectively, are entering the final phase of a £4.5m restoration project. However, construction workers on the project have reportedly been subjected to daily incidents of inappropriate and abusive language, while newly restored items have been vandalised since works began in spring.

The Chronicle previously reported that vandalism, including defecation and theft, has damaged critical navigation equipment essential for the safety of the river and caused delays to the restorations.
