SC orders compensation for unlawful MBBS admission cancellation

The Supreme Court has directed the State of Maharashtra and a medical college to pay compensation of Rs. 1 lakh to a student who was unfairly denied admission to the MBBS (UG) course, causing him one year of distress.

The court also issued guidelines for future admissions until suitable rectifications are made in the existing rules.
The case pertained to a batch of appeals filed by a student, a domicile of Maharashtra, against the decisions of the Bombay High Court. The three-judge Bench comprising Justice B.R. Gavai, Justice Rajesh Bindal, and Justice Sandeep Mehta ruled that admission couldn't be granted in the ongoing session but allowed the student to reclaim his seat in the next academic year, NEET UG-2024.
