PSU Banks Expand Market Share Despite Credit Growth Slowdown: UBI Report

In Financial Year 2025 (FY25), credit growth across the Indian banking sector witnessed a moderation, yet Public Sector Banks (PSBs) managed to outperform their private counterparts by gaining incremental market share, according to a recent report by Union Bank of India.
This gain was evident across various lending categories and geographic regions, highlighting a significant shift in lending dynamics between PSBs and Private Banks (PVBs).
The report underlined that although the overall pace of credit growth slowed during the year, PSBs were able to leverage this environment to strengthen their market position. "Credit growth slowed in FY25, yet PSBs gained market share vis-a-vis PVBs," the report noted.
This performance was not limited to any one segment—it extended across the nature of loans (working capital, retail, industrial) as well as geographical regions (rural, semi-urban, urban, and metropolitan areas).
