PM Modi's NEP 2020: Reviving Indian Knowledge, Inspiring Global Competency, Ensuring Viksit Bharat

July 29, 2025

In 2020, under the visionary leadership of PM Narendra Modi, India launched its most ambitious and transformative education reform in over three decades—the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

- RUBAL KANOZIA, ROBIN JINDAL & RAGHAVENDRA P. TIWARI

More than a policy, it is a national awakening that redefines the purpose, structure, and outcome of education. Through systemic reforms, NEP 2020 aims to create a generation of empowered youth and women who are not only career-ready but also nation-builders, equipped to lead India into an era of economic strength, technological leadership, and cultural resurgence to fructify the nation's aspiration of Viksit Bharat@2047.

By breaking away from the colonial legacy of rote learning and narrow academic silos, NEP lays the foundation for a Viksit Bharat by 2047 and India's re-emergence as a Vishwa Guru—a global teacher and knowledge leader rooted in its civilizational wisdom and future-ready capabilities. At its heart lies the mission to unlock the potential of every young Indian, especially girls and young women, by ensuring equitable access, flexibility, and empowerment through education. NEP 2020 captures the timeless wisdom enshrined in "सा विद्या या विमुक्तये"—S vidya ya vimuktaye—True knowledge is that which liberates from ignorance, poverty, and limitations.

SKILLING THE YOUNG FOR A NEW ECONOMY

One of the most powerful interventions in NEP 2020 is the integration of vocational education from Grade 6, with internships woven into school curricula. This means that students, especially girls from rural and underprivileged backgrounds, are getting introduced to skill development early in life, helping them gain financial independence and confidence. For youth, especially those from lower-income families, this reform provides a pathway out of poverty by equipping them with employable skills. For women, it breaks stereotypes by enabling them to enter non-traditional trades, be it carpentry, coding, or culinary arts, and challenge gender roles. This early exposure to real-world skills not only increases participation in the workforce but creates a generation of self-reliant, job-ready youth with entrepreneurial spirit.
