Preliminary industry data revealed a decline in the sales of petrol and diesel during the first half of June due to reduced demand in the agricultural sector and decreased vehicular movement following the onset of the monsoon.
In the period of June 1-15, the demand for diesel, which constitutes approximately two-fifths of the total fuel consumption in the country, witnessed a decline of 6.7 per cent, amounting to 3.43 million tonnes compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
Previously, diesel sales had experienced significant growth of 6.7 per cent and 9.3 per cent in April and May, respectively, attributed to increased agricultural demand and higher usage of air-conditioning in vehicles to combat the summer heat.
In comparison to the 3.31 million tonnes of diesel consumed in the first half of May, the month-on-month sales observed an increase of 3.4 per cent.
