Kin of deceased in West Bengal train crash to receive Rs 10 Lakh ex-gratia from Centre

The BJP-led Central government has announced an enhanced ex-gratia compensation for victims of the tragic train mishap in West Bengal's Darjeeling involving the Kanchenjunga Express passenger train and a goods train.

The collision resulted in at least eight fatalities and over 20 injuries. Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that families of the deceased would receive Rs 10 lakh each, while those with grievous and minor injuries would be compensated Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 50,000, respectively.
Among the deceased were the loco pilot of the goods train and the guard of the passenger train, as confirmed by a Railway official. "The death toll is 8. A special train departed from the accident site to Sealdah at 12:40 hours. Most passengers, who are primarily from Malda and Bolpur, are safe," said Kaushik Mitra, Chief PRO of Eastern Railway.
