India slashes import duty on mobile parts
The Business Guardian
|February 01, 2024
In a significant move to boost the country's electronics exports, the Union Ministry of Finance has announced a reduction in import duties on key components used in mobile phone production. The decision, revealed in a late Tuesday notification, is anticipated to have a positive impact on the mobile phone sector, fostering growth and enhancing global competitiveness.
-
The import duty on various components has been slashed from 15 percent to 10 percent. These components include screws, SIM sockets, metal mechanical items for cellular mobile phones, battery covers, front covers, main lenses, back covers, GSM antennas, PU cases, sealing gaskets, and other plastic and metal mechanical items. Additionally, items such as conductive cloth, LCD conductive foam, heat dissipation stickers, protective films, and other components used in cellular mobile phone manufacturing will also attract a lower import duty.
This move aligns with the government's Atmanirbhar and Make in India initiatives, aiming to make Indian manufacturers globally competitive, attract investments, boost exports, integrate India into the global supply chain, and reduce dependency on imports. The telecom industry in India, which has become a significant investment and employment generator, witnessed mobile phone exports exceeding USD 10 billion in the financial year 2022-23.
