INCOME TAX TELLS SUPREME COURT: NO COERCIVE ACTION AGAINST CONGRESS OVER TAX DEMAND OF RS 3500 CRORES DURING LOK SABHA ELECTIONS

The Supreme Court in the case Indian National Congress v. Commissioner of Income Tax Delhi observed wherein the Income Tax Department on Monday undertook before the court that no coercive action will be taken against the Indian National Congress, INC in respect of the income tax demand of approximately an amount of Rs 3500 crores till July 2024 because of the impending Lok Sabha elections.

The bench comprising of Justice BV Nagarathna and Justice Augustine George Masih was hearing the present matter wherein this undertaking was made by the Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta on behalf of the Department.
In the present case, the bench was hearing the civil appeal filed by the Congress party in 2018 which being against a 2016 judgment of the Delhi High Court.
