Foreign investors pull out Rs 28,200 crore from Indian stocks amid election worries

Foreign investors have pulled out a substantial Rs 28,200 crore from Indian equities this month, driven by uncertainties surrounding the general elections and the allure of more attractive valuations in the Chinese markets.

This withdrawal significantly exceeds the net pullout of Rs 8,700 crore in April, which was influenced by concerns over changes in India’s tax treaty with Mauritius and a persistent rise in US bond yields.
In the preceding months, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) had shown strong interest in Indian equities, with net investments of Rs 35,098 crore in March and Rs 1,539 crore in February.
However, the trend reversed dramatically in May, with FPIs pulling out Rs 28,242 crore from equities by May 17, according to depository data.
