Jharkhand brings coaching centres under law

January 21, 2026

Jharkhand has taken a decisive step towards regulating its fast-expanding coaching industry with Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar granting assent to the Jharkhand Coaching Centre (Control and Regulation) Act, 2025.

- Mail News Service

Passed by the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly, the legislation introduces a comprehensive legal framework aimed at ensuring student safety, transparency in operations, and accountability among coaching centre managements across the state.

For years, private coaching centres in Jharkhand have grown rapidly, catering to students preparing for board examinations and competitive tests.

This expansion, however, has largely taken place in the absence of formal regulation. Complaints ranging from exorbitant fees and misleading promises to unsafe buildings and unqualified teaching staff have been common.

The new law seeks to address these concerns by bringing coaching centres under statutory oversight for the first time.

Under the Act, any coaching centre enrolling more than 50 students at the school, college, or university level must mandatorily register with the designated authority.
