The Weekend Pause: Reclaim the rhythm of rest to restore balance
Tempo
|October 11, 2025
After months of disappointing and shocking news on unthinkable actions and situations — flood control projects that were either substandard or not there at all — the value of weekend rest has quietly diminished.
-
The pace of modern life — spiced with the overwhelming presence of stories on corruption — has accelerated our days to the point where even weekends—once a sanctuary for families, faith, and reflection—have become extensions of the workweek. The line that once separated labor from leisure has blurred, and with it, our collective capacity to pause and regain balance.
The traditional Filipino weekend used to carry its own rhythm. Saturday mornings were devoted to household chores or family errands, afternoons to community or parish activities, and Sundays to rest and worship. The weekend allowed both body and spirit to recover, a rhythm that nurtured family ties and social connection. Today, however, that rhythm has been replaced by an unrelenting rush—emails that demand attention, online meetings that ignore time zones, and the pervasive habit of bringing work home. On top of that is social media where news has become addictive entertainment.
