The introduction of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill, 2026 in the Lok Sabha has triggered widespread concern among LGBTQ+ activists and human rights organisations across India. The proposed amendment seeks to modify key provisions of the existing law governing transgender rights and recognition in the country. Activists and community leaders argue that the changes could significantly alter how transgender identities are defined, recognised, and protected under Indian law.

The amendment proposes major revisions to the framework established under the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, particularly in relation to legal recognition of gender identity. One of the most controversial changes is the removal of the provision that recognises a person's right to self-perceived gender identity.
