REDHILL LOSE IN PLAY-OFFS WEEKS AFTER ‘WINNING’ LEAGUE TITLE
"I HOPE this never happens to anyone again," admitted captain Eoin Fraser after Redhill missed out on a place in the play-off final - five weeks after they celebrated winning the league.
After it was announced hours before the final games of the Combined Counties League Premier South season that league leaders Jersey Bulls were due to be docked three points for fielding an ineligible player, Redhill knew that if they beat Guildford City on Saturday, April 19, they would win the league and with it, promotion to the Isthmian League.
Redhill duly beat City 1-0, thanks to Charlie Penny's late strike, and celebrated.
However, as part of Jersey's appeal against the docked points, it came to light days later that Redhill had committed the same offence earlier in the season.
And so Redhill, like Jersey, were docked points and AFC Whyteleafe were the new champions - a most anticlimactic way to win a title for Leafe.
