Data from Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) show 151 homes in the area have had solar panels fitted in the six months up to April -34 in the Sunderland Central Parliamentary constituency, 44 in Washington and Gateshead South and 73 in Houghton and Washington.

That means there are now 11,127 domestic solar panel installations in the city-2,108 in Sunderland Central, 4,216 in Washington and Gateshead South and 4,803 in Houghton and Washington.

Nationally, there were more than 1.5million installations by the end of April-with 20,405 in that month alone.

Most solar panel installations in the UK are domestic. In April, 68% of the new systems were installed on a residential building, adding a total of 59 MW of solar capacity.
