Rise in children in temporary homes as hundreds at risk of homelessness

Scores of children in Sunderland were forced to live in temporary accommodation in the first three months of this year, new figures show.

New figures released by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) also show there were also 201 households in the city classed as being threatened with homelessness.

The data comes as the number of children without a settled home hit a record number nationally and a homelessness charity warned thousands were facing a "long summer stuck in damaging and insecure" accommodation.

The 127 youngsters in temporary homes in the city at the end of March was up from the 72 a year earlier but the 201 'at risk' households was below the 283 a year earlier.

Of those households, 25 were headed by a single parent, and 18 were couples with dependent children.

Across the North East, there were about 770 children living in temporary accommodation at the end of March.

This was more than the approximate 740 a year earlier.
