As the sugarcane region of KwaMbonambi in KwaZulu-Natal prepares to bid farewell to one of its most distinguished sons, residents are being urged to brace for an unusual surge in traffic and a slew of road closures in and around the uMfolozi Local Municipality.

The funeral of ambassador Nathi Mthethwa, South Africa's envoy to France and former cabinet minister, takes place today at the Siyabonga Sangweni Sport Complex - an event expected to draw dignitaries from across the nation.

For a rural locality, best known for its sweeping sugarcane fields and tranquil rhythm, this special official funeral brings a rare disruption. The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) yesterday issued pointed warnings for locals.
