Nigeria dismisses US claims over Christians

NIGERIAN Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar underscored his government's commitment to religious freedom and the rule of law, pushing back against US Predeint Donald Trump’s claim about the alleged killing of Christians in the West African nation.

Asked about the US president’s comments on Tuesday with his German counterpart in Berlin, Tuggar produced a document that he said articulated what Nigeria’s constitution stipulated about religious freedom.
“This is what guides us and this is what shows it’s impossible for there to be a religious persecution that can be supported in any way, shape or form by the government of Nigeria at any level,” he said, standing alongside German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul.
Trump claimed at the weekend that Christians were being systematically killed in Nigeria “in very large numbers” and pledged the US would intervene to protect them. The false assertion has gained traction in recent months.
