Bees thought they had a point but Thiago denied at the death

- BY GEORGE SESSIONS

JACK HINSHELWOOD scored the winner, but Bart Verbruggen was the real hero for Brighton after a dramatic stoppage-time penalty.

The Seagulls had been set to taste defeat in Fabian Hurzeler's 50th match in charge after Igor Thiago’s ice-cool first-half spot-kick had the visitors in front.

But Danny Welbeck’s 71st-minute leveller sparked a grandstand finish, with substitute Hinshelwood able to complete the turnaround with six minutes left.

Further drama was to follow in stoppage-time as Maxim De Cuyper was penalised for holding on to Kevin Schade - but Thiago was unable to earn Brentford a share of the spoils.

The casual penalty technique of the Brazil forward came back to bite him as Verbruggen (right) didn't dive until the last moment, and saved the spot-kick - to spark wild celebrations at Amex Stadium.

Hurzeler was in the stands after a third yellow card this season and quality in the final third remained in short supply in the early exchanges.
