First Mother's Day at home after being set free by gift of organs

- MARTIN BAGOT

A donor gave me life I dreamed of

JESS Harris will today celebrate Mother's Day in a way she never thought she could with a baby of her own after getting her life back thanks to an organ donor.

Jess, 36, spent years trapped at home doing self-administered dialysis while waiting in hope for a kidney and pancreas transplant.

Our sister paper, the Daily Mirror, told her story seven years ago in its campaign to stop organs being wasted when would-be donors died without their wishes being known.

With a tube permanently fitted in her abdomen, Jess explained how dialysis was the first thing she did when she woke up, and the last thing she did before bed and that it was all she could think about in between.

A change to the organ donor law finally came into effect two years later. But by then Jess had already been given a double-transplant.
