Trump peace deal 'not good enough'

President Donald Trump is desperate to end the war which began in February 2022 when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of its neighbour.

A leaked 28-point agreement pushed by the White House, which includes major Ukrainian concessions, such as giving up its territory and halving the size of its military, has been heavily criticised.

Prime Minister Starmer yesterday joined leaders from Europe, Canada and Japan to express concerns about the plan, reportedly drawn up in secret between the Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and Kremlin representative Kirill Dmitriev.

They said while the document contained "elements that will be essential for a just and lasting peace", it was important that borders "are not changed by force".

The peace plan is believed to propose that Ukrainian troops withdraw from the part of eastern Donetsk they currently control to hand the whole region over to Russia.
