IN APRIL 2015, on the 10th anniversary of Emma Caldwell's death, the Sunday Mail ran a picture of Iain Packer across the front page, with another eight pages of reporting inside, beneath a headline calling him “The Forgotten Suspect”.

The headline was wrong, though. Detectives hadn't forgotten Packer. They had hidden him.

He was a killer concealed for almost a decade because some of Scotland's most senior police officers and prosecutors refused to risk the reputational damage of admitting their mistakes.
