National boss Clarke plotting return to club management

- SCOTT MCDERMOTT

STEVE CLARKE has revealed he wants to get Scotland to a World Cup - then return to club management.

The Scotland boss has been in charge for six years and has led the nation to two European Championship finals.

But with his contract due to expire at the end of this World Cup campaign, Clarke is determined to be in the USA, Canada and Mexico next summer.

If he achieves it, the 62-year-old says he'll then consider going back into club football.

Scotland can put themselves in a terrific position if they can follow up the 3-1 win over Greece on Thursday by beating Belarus at Hampden today.

The manager will make history by chalking up the most matches of any Scotland boss tonight.

And he's desperate to follow that up by getting to his third major tournament - and our first World Cup since 1998.

Clarke said: "I see myself with a club job in the future.

"But then I look at the ages of the young coaches and managers and think 'Oh, I hope they don't think I'm too old for it'. Because I'm certainly not.

"But at this moment, I'll just concentrate on what I'm doing here.

We've got a big target to try and achieve.
