Repeal of bail puts money before victims

THE Scottish Government's decision to repeal a presumption against bail for people accused of violent, sexual, and/or domestic abuse offences is a clear compromise of public safety.

It means that courts will no longer need a good reason not to lock up some of the most dangerous thugs in society and will clearly result in many more of them roaming the streets.

And the victims of these lowlifes will in very many instances be women who could have to contend with an abuser being released back to their home.

The reason for introducing Section 23D of the Criminal Procedure (Scotland) Act 1995 in the first place was give greater protection to victims of domestic abuse.

That is why they are specifically mentioned in its description.
