Ministers claimed they abandoned the legislation because there was not enough time before the 2026 Holyrood election, and vowed instead to strengthen protections for women in existing hate crime laws.

But For Women Scotland's Susan Smith said: "It's really interesting that apparently the Supreme Court ruling has made an issue for the Misogyny Bill. Because there is no reason it should have been done if it was just about protecting women. We've heard Helena Kennedy... recently talking about men in women's prisons. She has been very much on the trans women line and I just wondered how overt that misogyny Bill had been.
