A brief history
-
The ladder used by thieves to gain access to the Louvre museum.
From the hallowed halls of the world’s great museums to quiet galleries in unassuming cities, audacious museum heists have repeatedly demonstrated that no cultural institution is entirely immune from the lure of theft.
These robberies may vary in motive, scale and aftermath, but they share a common thread: priceless objects vanish, security is exposed, and the wider public is forced to reckon with the fragility of heritage.
One of the most famous of all began in 1911 when the painting now regarded as the world’s most iconic work was stolen from its museum. A former employee concealed himself overnight and lifted the piece under his coat, exiting the building unnoticed. The theft went undetected for more than twenty-four hours. In the aftermath the work was recovered in another country two years later. This incident not only elevated the painting's fame but also shone a light on the fact that even the most celebrated artefacts are vulnerable.
Decades later, in 1990, an elaborate operation unfolded in Boston. Two men donned police uniforms and entered a museum in the early hours of the morning. They spent over an hour inside, leaving with thirteen works by masters of the art world. Because the thieves acted with confidence, patience and a degree of disguise, the institution was caught entirely flatfooted. Even today none of those pieces has been definitively recovered and the empty frames hang as a haunting reminder of what was lost. This event remains one of the most significant museum thefts ever committed in terms of value, ambition and mystery.

On February 28, 1986, I was chairing a conference on Cooperative Policy at the Agricultural Research and Training Institute (ARTI), which included a senior delegation of Cooperative experts from Sweden, when I received an urgent summons from the President. Such a summons were always somewhat destabilizing because you wondered as to what could have caused the head of State to suddenly send for you.
