Akshata Murty first surprised then stunned activists in Manchester with an unscheduled speech in which she declared her love for her husband and her confidence that he has the strengths and values to lead Britain forward.

But it emerged that she is a regular canvasser for the Tories, and is always a hit on the doorstep.

Her heartfelt, winsome and eloquent performance at conference triggered comparisons with Michelle Obama and Sarah Brown - and MPs now look forward to welcoming her to their constituencies ahead of the looming election.
