MESSAGE ON WORLD OCEANS DAY

- By Emily Ferguson ROYAL EDITOR

Sir David and Wills hook up to save the sea

THE PRINCE of Wales has teamed up with natural history broadcaster Sir David Attenborough to warn the public about the dire state of the world's oceans.

In a relaxed four-minute video, the pair discussed the celebrated filmmaker's new documentary, Ocean, with Sir David talking about his hope the film will “shift public awareness” about some of the appalling fishing practices devastating the seabed and marine life.

Both have been powerful advocates for protecting the natural world, and the clip highlighted the mutual affection and bond they have built.

It comes as the prince heads to Monaco to attend a summit focused on ocean preservation, where he will deliver a speech calling for “urgency and optimism while we still have the chance”.

During their conversation, William and Sir David discussed the broadcaster’s journey of ocean exploration during his lifetime, which has seen him film documentaries in more than 83 countries.

And yesterday the Prince said it had been a “true honour” to speak with the naturalist, adding: “(It's) fascinating to reflect on the wonder of the ocean and the legacy of a man who has dedicated his life to telling its story.

“A conversation shared about a lifetime of exploration, the urgent challenges facing our seas, and the hope that lies in restoring and protecting them for generations to come. Sir David’s latest documentary is a rallying cry for one of our planet’s most precious resources.”
