PM 'really fears' for pensioners if Starmer wins power
● The British people 'won't be taken for granted' he declares
PENSIONERS will be hit with a £1,000 “retirement tax” if Labour wins power, Rishi Sunak warned last night.
The Prime Minister predicted that Keir Starmer would “betray” the over-65s and hammer them over the next five years.
He also blasted the Labour leader’s brazen efforts to woo older voters who hold the key to victory in next month’s General Election.
In an exclusive interview with the Sunday Express, Mr Sunak said: “I really fear for pensioners under a future Labour government. Labour has shown time and time again that they will betray our country’s pensioners.
“You saw it with Gordon Brown’s £100billion tax raid on pensions and you saw it with the 75p increase.”
Mr Sunak hit out as the gloves came off in the fight for the influential “grey vote”.
Sir Keir has made a cast-iron pledge to protect the triple lock, which guarantees a decent rise for all pensioners.
But that was trumped by the PM last week when he announced his “triple lock plus”, which ensures the personal tax allowance for retirees will always be more than the state pension.
Mr Sunak said that was now the big dividing line for retired folk when they decide how to vote on July 4.
He declared: “The first tax cut of this campaign, out in the first week, is a tax cut for pensioners – the triple lock-plus.
“Labour has not matched that, meaning under a future Labour government there’s a £1,000 retirement tax coming. That’s the choice for pensioners at this election.”
The PM spoke to the Sunday Express aboard his new election battle bus during a day of campaigning in the North East of England. He said: “Everyone wants to know their parents, their grandparents, when they get to that stage in life are going to be looked after.
