Army veteran among millions living in cold and damp houses

- BY LUCY JOHNSTON Health Editor

A 64-YEAR-OLD Army veteran is one of millions enduring life in cold, mould-infested homes...relying on a small blow heater to survive.

Keith Vaughan, an ex-Royal Army Medical Corps member with 22 years service, is among 1.3 million English households — including one million children — living in damp conditions.

Mr Vaughan’s situation highlights the severity of the housing crisis, with research released today showing 64% of those in cold, damp homes report respiratory problems, and 62% struggle to wash and dry clothes.

The data — from government figures as well as a survey of 2,000 people — shows mental health is also being impacted, leaving 64% of residents feeling anxious, and 57% helpless.

Among parents, 71% are deeply concerned about the long-term effects of damp on their families.
