Grand getaway as 14 million hit roads

A LAST-GASP getaway will see up to 14 million people make car journeys today to reach family and friends for Christmas.

Drivers have been warned to expect lengthy delays, with the closure of several major rail stations in London adding to congestion on the roads.

High winds and heavy rain are also forecast to make journeys a challenge in the Midlands, North East and the South of England, as well as in Wales.

It comes after 16.4 million cars clogged roads yesterday on the busiest pre-Christmas travel day.
