Daily attacks on police hit 100 as suicides soar

MORE than 100 police officers are assaulted every day, shocking figures reveal.

Union bosses say it is affecting mental health with 17 officers a year taking their own life.

For the year 2022/23, there were 40,000 assaults - with 11,000 resulting in significant injuries.

The Police Federation said more officers are on long-term sickness or stuck in backroom roles, with some waiting two years for surgery.

Paul Williams, the union's Wellbeing Lead, said: "This is the stark and grim reality of the challenges we face.

"It's a real risk for the future of policing as assaults rise at a staggering rate."
