Small crossovers are dominating our roads because they are affordable and practical.

So much so that a firm better known for its stylish four-door saloons and two-seater sports cars has jumped on the bandwagon. Alfa Romeo’ Junior originally launched its SUV as a pure EV ~ but now comes the Junior Ibrida: a hybrid version cheaper and just as attractive to look at. So let's find out how good it is.

WHAT'S NEW?

The petrol-electric drivetrain aims to make the Junior more appealing to customers chasing a lower price tag, Other changes include revised styling at the front and different trim levels. It sits on Stellantis’ “STLA Small’ platform shared with the Peugeot 2008, Vauxhall Mokka, Jeep Avenger and Fiat 600.

UNDER THE BONNET?

There’s a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol mated to a 48-volt battery and electric motor. It produces 134bhp and 230Nm of torque, while 60mph takes 8.7 seconds. Top speed is 128mph.

Alfa Romeo claims the car can do more than 57mpg on the combined cycle and that emissions are a low 110g/km of CO2. All hybrid versions come with an automatic gearbox.

WHAT'S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?
