£800k in fines for car that flouted eco zone 550 times

A SINGLE vehicle has clocked up almost £825,000 of fines after being captured by "clean air" zone cameras more than 550 times.

It was among a string of cars, vans and lorries being chased by officials for more than £300,000 each for breaking London's camera-controlled Low Emission Zone rules. These clean air zones were introduced in 2008 to deter the owners of the most polluting vehicles entering the heart of the capital.

Owners of vehicles that do not meet emissions targets and enter the central zone can get slapped with a fine ranging from £500 to £2,000 for each violation. But Transport for London has disclosed there are some drivers who keep breaking the rules, and have been repeatedly fined.
