They were also assured that any boxes returned would be properly recycled.

Officers told the committee: “They tend to be on an alternative collection model anyway so would retain the box system.”

The new glass collection bin will also be covered by the pull out service where it applies.

Labour councillor Danny Gibson said: “Our staff have been very clear about the manual handling risk. People at home are used to lifting one box but our staff are lifting hundreds of these every week.”

He added that for most properties it would mean little change in terms of footprint.

“It won't take up any more space than the box does anyway. People can keep their box for their flat if they want.
