PASSENGER SAFETY

State Times

July 14, 2025

In a bid to enhance security and ensure passenger safety, Indian Railways has announced plans to install CCTV cameras in coaches of trains. This move comes in response to growing concerns over crime, anti-social behavior, and other incidents that passengers might face while traveling. The initiative, which is expected to be rolled out gradually, aims to provide a safer and more secure travel experience, not only for passengers but also for the Railway staff.

The decision to install CCTV cameras in trains stems from multiple factors. First and foremost, the safety of passengers is always a priority. Over the years, there have been multiple reports of thefts, assaults, and other crimes occurring within the confines of train compartments. With over 23 million people traveling daily on Indian Railways, ensuring their safety has become a top concern for the national transporter.

Moreover, incidents like chain snatching, groping, and even cases of terrorist activities in trains have also raised alarms. Passengers often find themselves in vulnerable positions when traveling in unreserved coaches or during late-night hours. With cameras in place, it would become easier to identify suspects and gather evidence to help law enforcement agencies take swift action.
