PRIME Minister Keir Starmer has written an open letter to the people of Southport following the news that £10 million will be spent on a legacy garden in the town centre.

PM: 'I hope it can become a symbol of your resilience and renewal'

The Prime Minister met with the families of Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe and Alice da Silva Aguiar last week where they discussed the new plans for Town Hall Gardens in the town centre.

Now, Keir Starmer has penned an open letter to the people of Southport.

He said: "Dear Southport. Last summer, you showed Britain the meaning of community. In the most traumatic of circumstances, you stood united. Neighbours, volunteers, businesses, faith groups - a whole town brought together by compassion. Wrapping your collective arms tightly around your own.

"Of course, so much of this positivity and love took place in the Town Hall Gardens on Lord Street, which became a rallying point for hope and solidarity. Every community has its special places and I recognise how special the gardens became for you.
